About ICBFM

The Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is one of the international leaders in creation of gene-directed biologically active agents, studying of physico-chemical bases of processes of transfering and saving of hereditary information. Genodiagnostic of infectious, autoimmune and tumoral diseases are also studied at the Institute. The Institute provides production of enzymes for biotechnology and medical diagnostics (DNA ligases, DNA polymerases, nucleases), synthesis of oligonucleotides, nucleosidtriphosphates. According to the SCImago Institutions Rankings (2020), ICBFM RAS is on the second place among all Russian scientific organizations. The ICBFM SB RAS research focus:

• Structure and functions of biomolecules and supramolecular complexes, directed influences on genetic structures; Bioengineering, biopolymer synthesis and synthetic biology.
• Biotechnology: gene therapy, cell technology in regenerative medicine, bionanotechnology.
• Clinical physiology, genetic basis of personalized medicine, molecular basis of immunity and carcinogenesis.
• Ecology of organisms and their associations, extremophiles associations, viral and bacterial agents in mammalian.
• The structure of the Institute includes:
• 16 Laboratories and research groups;
• “Genomics” Core Facility of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
• Center of New Medical Technologies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
• Interdisciplinary “Russian-American Laboratory of Biomedical Chemistry” (head of the Laboratory Sidney Altman - Nobel winner, USA).
• Joint Center for genomic, proteomic and metabolomics studies

Since 2000 on the basis of ICBFM the “Genomics” Core Facility exists, which ensures needs of Siberian academic community in DNA sequencing (from standard definition of nucleic acids sequences to high performance sequencing - Next Generation Sequencing). In 2006 on the basis of Institute was created the Department - Center of New Medical Technologies SB RAS, in which approbation of new development and technologies of institutes of SB RAS take place. 163 Researchers work at the Institute, among them: 2 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 24 doctors of science, 102 candidates of science (PhD). The winners of the State prizes, awards of the Government of the Russian Federation, and number of other prestigious Russian and international awards work at the ICBFM SB RAS.

The Institute is base for the Chair of Molecular biology of Novosibirsk state university. Annually more than 40 students carry out courseworks and master’s works at the Institute. Postgraduate study is carried out in 6 specialties: Bioorganic chemistry; Molecular biology; Biochemistry; Molecular genetics; Genetics; Cellular biology, cytology, histology: more than 30 graduate students are trained annually. Dissertation council (D 003.045.01) on the doctoral and PhD theses defense on specialities: Bioorganic chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular biology works at the Institute.

The Institute was founded in 1984 and currently has a staff of about 332 people,including

ICBFM SB RAS divisions ICBFM consists of 14 laboratories, 2 research groups, 9 laboratories of Center of new medical technologies.
